Product Description

Warm Chestnut Herringbone is a 15/3mm engineered European oak herringbone floor: 600 x 125mm blocks, 15mm thick, with a 3mm solid oak face over a multi-ply core, a brushed matte UV-lacquered surface and an AB grade with only small, infrequent knots. Warm Chestnut is the warm brown option: a rich, deep tone that gives real contrast against white walls and suits formal living rooms and entries. It is part of LocalTasker's own engineered oak range: see it at any of our four Melbourne showrooms, supply only or supplied and installed.

Herringbone is the pattern most people picture when they think of a timber floor with character, and engineered construction makes it practical: the blocks are stable enough to be glued down or floated, and suitable for use over hydronic underfloor heating.

What AB grade means

Oak is graded by how much natural character each board shows. AB is the cleanest grade we stock: mostly clear boards (A) with some small, infrequent knots and mild colour variation (B). It gives a herringbone floor an even, refined look where the pattern, not the knots, is the feature. If you prefer more character, our wide-board range is ABC grade.

15/3mm or 15/4mm?

Both versions share the same block size, grade, finish and warranty. The 4mm veneer allows for more sanding over the floor's life, or a deeper sand if it is ever needed, so it suits owners planning to keep and refinish the floor for decades. The 3mm veneer can still be sanded and refinished and is the more economical option. See Warm Chestnut Herringbone 15/4mm.

Where it works

Herringbone suits hallways, entries, living and dining rooms, and any space where the floor is meant to be noticed; the small blocks also make narrow rooms feel wider. Like all timber floors it is not recommended for bathrooms, laundries or other wet areas; for those rooms see our waterproof herringbone hybrid.

Warm Chestnut as a wide board, and the other herringbone colours

Warm Chestnut is also available as a Warm Chestnut 14/3mm wide-board engineered floor. The other colours in the 15/3mm herringbone range are Latte, Natural Smoked Oak, Zen; see the full engineered herringbone range.

Supply only, or supplied and installed

See Warm Chestnut Herringbone in person and take a sample home at our showrooms in Ormond, Camberwell, Heidelberg West and Nunawading, then buy by the box online or in store. Stock is held at our Heidelberg West warehouse: collect it there, or ask our team about delivery. Each box covers approximately 1.2m²; use the area calculator and allow 10–15% for cutting waste, which is higher for herringbone than for plank floors. Herringbone takes care to set out, so most customers have it installed: tick “I would also like an installation quote” before you check out and our team will contact you with a quote for installation after your order; the work is guaranteed by both the installer and LocalTasker.

Frequently asked questions

What does 15/3mm mean?

15mm is the total thickness of the block and 3mm is the thickness of the solid European oak veneer on top; the rest is a multi-ply core that keeps the block stable.

Can engineered herringbone be sanded and refinished?

Yes. A 3mm veneer has enough depth to be sanded back and re-coated over the floor's life.

Should herringbone be glued down or floated?

Both are supported. Glue-down is the usual choice for herringbone because it keeps the pattern tight and quiet underfoot, especially on a concrete slab; floating over an underlay is possible on a flat, dry subfloor.

Can it go over underfloor heating?

Yes, this floor is suitable for use over hydronic underfloor heating. Your installer will confirm the system's surface temperature limits and acclimatise the blocks before laying.

Can LocalTasker install it for me?

Yes. Tick “I would also like an installation quote” on this page before checkout and our team will contact you after your order to quote the installation. Installation is guaranteed by both the installer and LocalTasker.

How much does one box cover?

Approximately 1.2m². Allow 10–15% extra for cutting, because herringbone produces more offcuts than a plank floor.
