Product Description

Smoked and limed oak brings a pale, driftwood-grey tone into a room without tipping into a flat grey laminate look. The smoking process darkens the timber's natural tannins while liming lifts the surface back to white, so the grain still shows through. This engineered flooring pairs a genuine 3mm European oak veneer with a 14mm engineered core and a wire-brushed, matte lacquer finish.

What does a smoked and limed finish actually look like?

It's a two-step process, not a paint colour: the oak is first smoked to darken its tannins toward grey-brown, then limed to bleach and lighten the surface back down. The result is a soft, pale grey-white tone with visible grain and a slightly weathered character, closer to a driftwood or Scandinavian-oak look than a flat grey finish, because the colour comes from the timber reacting rather than a stain sitting on top of it.

Is smoked and limed oak hard to keep clean?

No harder than any matte-lacquered engineered floor. The wire-brushed texture (light brushing that opens up the grain slightly) does more to hide everyday dust and light scuffs than a high-gloss finish would, which is one reason this look holds up well in busy entryways and living areas, not just in showroom photos.

Choosing between this and a warmer tone:

If you're deciding between Smoked Limed and a warmer colourway like Latte or Warm Chestnut, the practical test isn't which looks best in a photo, it's your fixed finishes. Grey-toned floors like this one sit well against black tapware, brushed nickel, white or grey stone benchtops, and cooler-toned joinery. Against warm brass fixtures or honey-toned existing timber, a warmer colourway usually suits the room better.

Know before you order

Because tongue and groove boards are glued or nailed rather than clicked, they're less forgiving of subfloor moisture than a click system. Laying T&G over a subfloor that hasn't been moisture-tested first is one of the more common causes of cupping or gapping complaints in engineered T&G floors generally. If you're supply-only, get the subfloor moisture-tested before the install date, not on the day.

Available as supply-only or supply-and-install. Compare it against our other straight-plank colourways, Mudita, Zen, the full Engineered European Oak range, professional installation. If you like this tone in a parquetry pattern, our Natural Smoked Oak herringbone uses a related smoked finish in a herringbone lay.

FAQ

What does "smoked and limed" mean on an oak floor?

It's a two-step finishing process: smoking darkens the oak's natural tannins, then liming bleaches the surface back to a pale grey-white, leaving the grain visible rather than covering it with a flat colour.

What thickness is this flooring?

A 3mm genuine European oak veneer over a 14mm engineered core, in 1900mm x 190mm boards.

Is this a click or glue-down floor?

It's a tongue and groove profile, which is typically glued or nailed rather than clicked. Ask our team which method suits your subfloor.
